How Southeast Asia Sees Japan in a Business Context:
Latest Insights from the 2025 State of Southeast Asia Survey

Southeast Asia is not only a geographical crossroads of major regional and global powers – it is also at a pivotal moment in time due to its strong growth projection. With rising uncertainties due to factors such as the intensifying US-China rivalry and broader global shifts, understanding how Southeast Asia perceives external players like Japan, the US, and China has become increasingly critical for businesses operating in the region.

The annual State of Southeast Asia survey conducted by the ASEAN Studies Centre at ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute provides valuable insights into the region’s perceptions of these global powers. While many Japanese media outlets reference this report, there is often limited focus on interpreting its findings from a Southeast Asian perspective – particularly in the context of Japanese business engagement.

In this seminar, we welcome Melinda Martinus, Lead Researcher at ISEAS and a key contributor to the survey, to share her firsthand insights. Her analysis will shed light on how Japanese businesses are viewed in the region and what strategic implications this holds.
